MABR Biodiversity and Conservation Education Series

October26
11:00 AM - 3:00 PM

Deadmans fingers! Witches butter! Devil’s Tooth! Oh my! These aren’t ingredients for a witches brew, but rather, common names for mushrooms that can be found in BC! Join us this spooky season as we dive into the whimsical and sometimes creepy world of coastal fungi.

Fungi expert, Terry Taylor, will be leading folks in a walking tour through Heritage Forest identifying fungi of all types and discussing their ecological roles in coastal forests.

We invite you to join us for the third installment of the Mount Arrowsmith Biosphere Region's (MABR) Biodiversity and Conservation Education Series. This series highlights the significance of the MABR's biological diversity and the regional conservation initiatives happening within.

As the seasons change, we get the unique opportunity to apply a focused lens on these funny decomposers and understand how they characterize our forests. Learn about enchanting fungi, community organizations stewarding the diverse ecosystems within the MABR, and how you can help!

The event begins at 11:00 am at the ts'xelikwshenawtxw, the MABR’s Public Education Centre (124 West Second Ave, Qualicum Beach), with presentations from the Mount Arrowsmith Biosphere Region Research Institute (MABRRI) and Terry Taylor. Topics include the importance of maintaining healthy biodiversity within the biosphere and fungi in coastal forest systems. Presentations will be followed by a quick discussion period and light lunch, after which we ask participants to meet Terry at the Heritage Forest.

Please note that due to a road closure on Cresent Road East we will be meeting at the Hemsworth at Dogwood entrance. Parking is limited so we do encourage folks to carpool or bike, if possible. As the walking tour will take place outside come rain or shine, we ask that folks dress for the weather and make sure to wear appropriate shoes.

Please note: This event has a limit of 20 participants. Registration for this event is on a first come, first served basis through this Eventbrite page. For more information, please contact kyla.seward@viu.ca
