Our Community Spotlight Series lets you learn more about our locals and what they love about living and doing business in Parksville Qualicum Beach. This month, we’re spotlighting the North Island Wildlife Rescue Centre.
Founded in 1985, the North Island Wildlife Recovery Centre (NIWRC) stands as a beacon of hope for injured and orphaned wildlife on Vancouver Island. Situated on eight acres of pristine land, this non-profit organization operates a world-class rehabilitation facility dedicated to caring for animals with diverse needs. From birds with broken wings to orphaned black bears and electrocuted eagles, NIWRC provides sanctuary and rehabilitation for various species.
Beyond its compassionate mission, NIWRC is committed to educating the public on wildlife and environmental issues. It invites visitors to delve into the wonders of nature through various educational exhibits and immersive experiences.
We spoke with Sylvia Campbell, Founder and vice President, about life in Parksville Qualicum Beach and some of her favourite local spots.
What do you love about where you live?
"I’m not a world traveller, but I’ve been to a few beautiful spots away from home. When it comes to Vancouver Island, my heart stays here. From tip to tip, it shows off the beauty of nature: hikes, beaches, rock formations, small-town living, or city excitement. But the Oceanside area is the hub for outdoor adventures. Rathtrevor Beach, countless hiking trails, abundant wild birds and animals, and incredible scenery. Someone asked me, “Where would you like to go for a holiday?” My answer was, “My own backyard.” There is nothing more beautiful than here."
Where do you take family and friends when they visit?
"I take visitors on hikes - Englishman River Falls, Little Qualicum Falls, and the Lighthouse trails are among my favourites."
What other businesses should people see during their visit?
"Visitors coming to Oceanside should visit the Horne Lake Caves, Coombs, Butterfly World, Qualicum Beach Museum, Parksville Museum, and the Art galleries."
What experiences make up your perfect day in PQB?
"Long beach walks at Parksville Boardwalk, a coffee at Creekmores, hiking at Englishman River Falls, bird watching at Qualicum Beach and checking out local art at The Old School House."
Thank you, Sylvia for sharing your favourite things to do in Parksville Qualicum Beach! When you visit Parksville Qualicum Beach, plan to spend some time exploring the remarkable work and educational offerings of the North Island Wildlife Recovery Centre, a haven for wildlife and enthusiasts alike.
