Community Spotlight Series: McMillan Arts Centre (The MAC)

Our Community Spotlight Series lets you learn more about our locals and what they love about living. This month, we’re spotlighting The McMillan Arts Centre.

Nestled in the heart of Parksville, the McMillan Arts Centre, affectionately known as "the MAC," stands as a beacon of creativity and community spirit. Originating as McMillan School in 1913 and transitioning to a vibrant arts hub under the stewardship of the Oceanside Community Arts Council since 1986, The MAC celebrates a rich history intertwined with artistic innovation.

Today, it offers gallery exhibitions, art classes for all ages, and a gift shop featuring over 170 local artists. The MAC is also excited about its new Community Art Garden, a creative outdoor space designed to be inclusive and accessible. It will enrich the community's cultural landscape with art therapy sessions, children’s classes, and even a space for musical expressions.

We had the pleasure of being shown around by Jennifer Bate, the Executive Director, who passionately leads the centre's various initiatives. Jennifer’s passion for the arts and her community shines through, making any MAC and Parksville Qualicum Beach visit a richly rewarding experience. Whether viewing an exhibit, participating in a workshop, or enjoying a performance, the MAC invites you to connect with art in new and meaningful ways.

What do you love about where you live?

"I cherish the Oceanside climate - long summers perfect for golfing, hiking, and secret beach spots. Living in Qualicum Beach and working in Parksville allows me to enjoy the small-town feel, knowing my neighbours and supporting local businesses."

Where do you take family and friends when they visit?

"The MAC is a must-visit, especially during our summer installation exhibit and kids' art camps. We also enjoy the new urban art garden, local beaches, Parksville Outdoor Theatre, Coombs Market, and local pubs and breweries."

What other businesses should people see during their visit?

"There are fantastic boutique shops in both Qualicum and Parksville. As a foodie and book lover, I recommend What’s Cooking in QB and the Mulberry Bush Bookstore."

What experiences make up your perfect day in PQB?

"My ideal day starts with breakfast by the water, followed by a beach walk, dinner at a local pub, and ending with a concert at the park."
