|Errington Farmers Market Celebrates its 39th Season||< BACK|
On Saturday, May 5th, the Errington Farmer’s Market will kick off its 39th annual season with special opening day events at the Errington Community Park. There will be a ribbon-cutting and christening ceremony for the newly completed park washroom, plus May Day activities and live music by Kirk and Co.
An Errington tradition since 1973, the Errington Farmers Market’s serves to encourage the production and sale of local agricultural goods, to provide a venue for local cultural groups and individuals to demonstrate their artistry, and to foster an interest and pride within the community. “Market Day isn’t just about buying and selling,” says president Skye Donald. “It’s also about community. Connecting people with fresh, local food and other goods is fantastic, but connecting people with their neighbours is even better.”
To that end, in addition to the many farmers, food producers and artisans selling their wares, there is free live music in the park each week. “For the past several years, our musicians were kindly sponsored by a local business. We’re looking for a new sponsor this year, and we hope that the community will respond generously,” says Donald. The Market is also seeking volunteers to help plan and execute more community events on Market Days this year, like the annual Hi, Neighbour Day festivities, set to take place on August 18th. The coffee shop will be open for another season, serving up their famous sticky buns to customers eager to spend a morning in the park.
As a member of the BC Association of Farmers’ Markets, all vendors at the Errington Farmers Market must make, bake or grow the goods they have for sale. Vendor enquiries are welcome, but limited number of space is available for non-farming vendors. Donald adds, “We always have space for more farmers, including small scale and backyard growers, but due to the popularity of our market, we have a waiting list for other vendors. To encourage back-yard growers, we even have special half-table rates for new, small vendors selling farm products.” Seasonal produce, plants, baked goods, eggs, yarn and rovings, and quality arts and crafts like pottery, tie-dye, art cards, jewelry, and needlework are just a few of the things that can be found at the market – all of it locally produced.
The Errington Farmers Market is open Saturdays from 10 AM to 1 PM, May through September, at the Errington Community Park, located at 1390 Errington Road. For the latest news on Market events, visit our website or connect with us on Facebook or Twitter.
